Opstelling in atelier, met o.a. Woman of the map (links) en Mare (rechts).
Woman of the Map (2006) - I traversed the city, visiting and photographing places connected to my history. I went from Duindorp, where my father played in the dunes as a child, to the Schilderswijk, where my grandfather had a furniture workshop. I then went to the Groot Hertoginnelaan, where my grandmother and mother settled after arriving from the Dutch East Indies. It was there that I was born in a back room. Finally, I went to Elandstraat and Bezuidenhout, where I lived as a student at the KABK.
I marked all these locations on a map of The Hague, and a female figure emerged from this, seeming to move majestically. The coastline and the sea form her hair, blowing in the wind. I created a life-size version of her out of slats, which I coloured red.
The piece is made of wood, glue and paint. H = 180 cm, W = 98 cm, D = 4 cm.
