ECHO OF BADANGA Sowing Seeds invited us (duo Akunzo) and sixteen artists from all over the world and also artists from India for an Artist in Residence in Badanga, Udaipur, India. The purpose was to connect you as an artist with the local culture, people, materials and crafts. We were invited because our work is visually responsive to the environment and we are interested in local customs and skills. We are very happy to have been given this opportunity! For Sowing Seeds, we worked with bamboo, textiles, wire, and stones. We built a work that can be understood in several ways: as a connection between earth and sky, as the interior of a temple, as the figure of a woman... On the wide lower form there are three smaller forms. They represent the full moon, the crescent moon and the stars. The work is brought in a procession to the place under the big tree near the school. The work was made especially for this place and echoes the encounter with India.

 

WORKING TOGETHER Aris de Bakker and I work as a duo under the name AKUNZO since 2014. We have been realizing ephemeral, site-specific projects in the Netherlands, but especially abroad. Now we present our work at Pulchri Studio in The Hague, our hometown, through videos, a construction in a lacework of branches, and a special collaborative project with bees.
This summer, we conducted experiments with a group of bees based on the principle of the "cadavre exquis". One person started a wax sculpture, the other built on it, and finally the third party, the bees, finished the work. The process of making these sculptures took place without words, without knowing what the other was going to do. In Pulchri's Garden Gallery the small wax works are exhibited together with film footage of the bees.

MUTUAL SECRETS Mutual Secrets is a new work, here on my studiowall, an embroidery-drawing in yarn and felt, 153x270x2cm.

 

ART THEORAMA #3 Proud that a ‘Summer Diary’ embroidery-drawing is now part of the new collection and catalog ‘Art Theorema #3’ which is part of the Imago Mundi Collection curated by Claudio Scorretti and Irina Ungureanu. The project brings together works by artists from more than 80 countries, all in the 10×12 cm format, and reflects on the concept of crisis. The exhibition is on view at Gallerie delle Prigioni in Treviso, Italy, until Sept. 17.

 

L'OBSERVATOIRE During the Artist-in-Residence in Beaulieu-lès-Loches, we made the work L'Observatoire in ‘Les Prairies du Roi’. These are the wet soils of Beaulieu-lès-Loches. The in situ artwork looks like a huge vase woven in a lace of branches. Visitors can enter, sit down or lie down on the wooden bench and look at the sky. Inside, in this open space, they experience a sacred and serene atmosphere. Sunlight is filtered through the tissue of branches. The organic lace-like structure can be interpreted as an ode to nature. Bird's nest, cocoon, chrysalis... The Observatory reminds us of  constructions made by birds or insects to protect and start a new cycle of life. It's a contemplative place for a moment of reflection and experience in connection with the universe.

 

HAZE Almost every morning I walked to the lake just below the cabin where we lived. Often I made a short video of the fine dancing haze rising from the surface of the water. I stayed in this special place during the Artist in Residence of Akunzo (Karola Pezarro & Aris de Bakker) in Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest. Akunzo realised in the forest of Bernheim the 'in situ' work OXYGEN. See also the video OXYGEN about the work we created.

WATERVERHALEN (video 06:27) made as a research during the Artist in Residence on Quadenoord, Veluwe, The Netherlands.

 

DE WATERDRAAGSTER The artist duo AKUNZO (Karola Pezarro & Aris de Bakker) created ‘De waterdraagster’ (She who carries water) for Landgoed Quadenoord, Veluwe, The Netherlands, as part of the Woest & Bijster festival. The artwork is located in a dry stream bordered by tall beech trees, as if in a natural cathedral. ‘De waterdraagster’ refers to the precarious water situation here and elsewhere in the world. The artwork is woven as a transparent lace with branches of beech and American oak, which are collected on site.

 

PRECIOUS Last weeks we made PRECIOUS for Aselart in Mazcuerras, Cantabria, Spain. PRECIOUS is about the value and beauty of nature, about transience and eternity. The artwork, shaped like a vase in an organic lace-like weave of branches, is made on the site around a newly planted taxus (yew) tree, a symbol for eternity. The sculpture highlights the tree as nature-element and protects it. As the years go by, the taxus tree will grow and the artwork will disappear.

 

IN TRANSIT II We titled the work IN TRANSIT, not knowing that it would also go through transitions itself. Leaves grew. That was magical. Last week we moved IN TRANSIT from Lac Trégu to the wetlands in La Gacilly, also in Bretagne, France. The rough grassy and swampy environment creates a new atmosphere and a new story. In the words of Phlippe Lérestif, president of Etangs d’art: “The Yves Rocher Foundation gives us the honor of inviting two artists: Aris de Bakker and Karola Pezarro. They present IN TRANSIT (originally commissioned by Etangs d’art in 2021) in the wet area nearby the heart of the village of La Gacilly."

LIQUID THOUGHTS Still from my video Liquid Thoughts (02:14), selected for the 'Shinano Primitive Sense Art Festival 2021 - the fleeting moment of water'. The video is screened in the Shinano Hall, Japan, the 27th of August.

 

RESERVOIR Somewhere on the edge of Girona's old town, you can descend via a stone staircase to a small plateau on which there is a large jug-like object. Next to it, water drips from the rock (Font d’en Pericot) and a little below flows a stream. At least in winter season. The object, the artwork RESERVOIR, looks like a jar, a container for water, with an arched opening at the top, but at the same time it is transparent like lace, because it is woven from hazel branches. Water would seep through. RESERVOIR is about the availability of water for everyone, about preserving what is valuable and refers to the fragile situation of our planet in these issues. RESERVOIR was made for Art & Gavarres on site by the Dutch artist duo AKUNZO.

EN ROUTE A Wolf carries the Planet on his back and runs forward. Like this Wolf, we are all on the way. The question is: where to, what is our destination and what do we do along our way? How do we relate to the Planet in the meantime? En route is made right on the spot by AKUNZO using hazelnut branches. Léz’Arts en Adret, Hautecour, Savoie, France.

 

DER SCHUTZPATRON - the patron saint. The old post road through the steep Twingi gorge (between Ernen and Binn) meanders along the slope. Along the road you will discover various memorials of people who died here. For hikers and walkers here and elsewhere Akunzo (Karola Pezarro & Aris de Bakker) made Der Schutzpatron, to protect us all on our way.
The historical connection between Ernen and Binn is now the venue for an annual exhibition - Twingi Landart - of contemporary artists. With their works they refer to the landscape.

 

IN TRANSIT For the first time we made a work on water (we = Akunzo = Karola Pezarro & Aris de Bakker) in a small lake in Bretagne, France. We get the fanastic reflection as a gift.
In Lake Trégu in Brocéliande, a feather-light boat floats just above the surface of the water. A creature resembling a wolf or a dog waits in the boat. Is it the ferryman who carries souls across? Do animal, boat and water refer to stories, such as the myth of Ys, the Breton city that disappeared under water? Brocéliande is a region in Bretagne that is a breeding ground for all kinds of myths and stories. Akunzo hopes this work will give rise to new stories.
IN TRANSIT is exhibited during Etangs d'Art 2021. Evert year, Etangs d'Arts is organized on several lakes.

 

QUARTO On the cover of Quarto 127 my work Endurance 9 with a text by Pascale Simonet on the inside. I’m very happy with it, with the beautiful print on silky paper and the sensitive text.

TADITADATADI a work by AKUNZO (Karola Pezarro & Aris de Bakker) for Le Parcours des Fées 2020, Crévoux, France. I am very happy that we could realize this work this summer!

TADITADATADI is inspired by the book Homo Ludens that the Dutch historian Huizinga wrote eighty years ago, just before the outbreak of the Second World War. His book is an ode to freedom. Only in freedom can play unfold and culture develop. Huizinga assumed that people are ‘homo ludens’, people who play. From this idea comes the basic thought that everything we call ‘culture’ comes out of play and also develops in a playful way. When the playing ability comes under pressure, the whole culture is under pressure. TADITADATADI challenges people to play together, experience space, see nature in different ways, listen to nature, make sounds and sing, throw or roll a ball, photograph each other through the funnel and to hide in, behind or under the artwork.

UNE VUE DE RÊVE a work by AKUNZO (Karola Pezarro & Aris de Bakker) is situated on the border of the Gironde, in France. The visitor can lean against one of the legs of the zeppelin-like shape (built from branches that have been harvested on site) looking at the landscape and the water, simply contemplating. Sentier des Arts 2019, Royan Atlantique, Le Pôle-Nature, Vitrezay.

This short video (00:57min.) shows the beautiful border of the Gironde and the changing colors during the day.

 

ECHO OF THE DESERT we - Karola Pezarro & Aris de Bakker - had the special opportunity to participate in the Tankwa Artscape Residency in the Tankwa Desert in South Africa. It was a wonderful and educational experience for us to work with what a raw landscape has to offer, in order not to disturb the place, but to reinforce the boned poetry of it.

With soundartist Quentin Green we created a soundscape in our installation. You can hear it in the video of two minutes about the work in Tankwa. So turn on the sound!

YOU LIFTED MY SPIRITS CBK Emmen. Tentoonstellingsmaker Hannie Reinierse stelde voor haar afscheid een tentoonstelling samen met werk van kunstenaars die haar inspireren, o.a. Eelco Brand, Miriam Geerts, Emile van der Kruk, Couzijn van Leeuwen, Ulrich Möckel, Karola Pezarro, Robert Smithson | Jan Niks. Hieronder (een detail van) nieuw werk BETWEEN.
Een ‘ suisval’ tussen hemel en aarde, tussen de tijd, tussen zijn en niet. Uit de zwevende centrale vrouwenfiguur spruiten kronkelstelen met bladeren. In de bladeren zijn woorden of samenstellingen van woorden geborduurd. Binnenwoorden. De woorden verwijzen naar eerder, naar een gebeuren, een gevoel dat daarbij hoorde, een verlangen, angst of verrukking. De haren van de figuur zou je ook als wortels kunnen zien waarmee de plant gevoed kan worden.
Woorden: suisval, twijfelpijn, elektrospel, vaderwandeling, woedepedaal, bloed, klokkenlift, ademen, traan, oksel, pendule, nachtrit, binnenogen, omarmen.

 

INTERSECTION a work of Akunzo (Karola Pezarro & Aris de Bakker) consists of four covered passages which come together in a chapellike form right on the crossing. The installation is made of living willow branches. The hiker will enter the work in order to continue his promenade. Art trails in Condrez-Famenne, Belgium 2017.

 

INTERSEZIONE DELLA VITA a work of Akunzo for LandArtProject Snijpunt in Ameland, an isle of the Netherlands. On top of the dunes Akunzo created with branches a lacelike chapel with a view. While watching the stunning surroundings one hears the tinkling sound of shells.

 

CREATURE OF THE WOODS LOOKING WHERE TO GO Akunzo made this work for L'Art est dans les Bois 2016 in Pleslin-Trigavou, France. The mirrors on the back of the creature - that is standing on a crossing - are reflecting the light, the trees, the sky and passers-by.

VISIONS is a video-sculpture for the light-festival Winterlicht 2015 in Schiedam, The Netherlands. It is about the Visionary and her visions. One sees a sequence of film clips on a floating circle between the branches of a big tree. Images from the news, stop-motion movies and personal film material. Our version of heaven and hell, of the paradise and the most terrifying, probably originates in our own perceptions, memories and in the chemistry of our brain. So we are making a second, or a personal reality. But what does that mean: reality?

AT HOME Karola Pezarro en Aris de Bakker (AKUNZO) bouwden hun project At Home voor Open Sites Art–Terre te Ploegsteert | Comines-Warneton, België.

 

FIGURES "... De vrijheid die Pezarro voelt om vanuit intuïtie te werken, stuurt haar richtingen op waarbij de omhulling telkens bedoeld is om datgene te beschermen wat haar gestaltes tot uitdrukking brengen en tegelijkertijd in zich verbergen." (Micha Ouwendijk, april 2014)

 

MIRROR is een videosculptuur in wording, over de maakbaarheid van herinneringen. De video wordt geprojecteerd op drie ovale bollende vormen. Niels de Bakker ontwikkelt het geluid.

 

JAARRINGEN en EIKENBLAD Twintig terrazzo cirkelsegmenten met een motief van jaarringen (die als een cirkel de bestrating omsluiten) en acht zitelementen (HIJ-zitjes) met een messing eikenblad-icoontje in de rug zijn bijna gereed. Ze zullen maart 2014 geplaatst worden op het Zellingplein, langs de Hollandsche IJssel bij Gouda.

 

HUMAN, CELLS en MIRROR zijn de werktitels voor een collectie beelden, een borduurwerk en een videosculptuur. Work in progress. Februari 2014.

 

TEXTILEARTIST.ORG Deze Britse website plaatste een artikel over mijn werk.

 

VITRINE 38 een kleine installatie met textiele stippen (Bindi 2) samen met een speciale toevoeging door Annemieke Louwerens, curator van de VITRINE in de Weimarstraat te Den Haag. Van 8 mei tot 26 juni 2013.

 

CORDOBA In Bad Nieuweschans is het noppenbouwstenen speelmuseum Bricksart geopend. Het speelmuseum richt zich op volwassenen en kinderen. Voor het museum heb ik het werk Cordoba met plastic noppenbouwstenen gemaakt. Het wordt opgesteld in een grote vitrine.

 

BOWLS, een videowerk in 5 schalen van gips, te zien van 17 november tot en met 9 december 2012 in Pulchri Den Haag.

 

GEDENKPLEK ELZENHOF, een gedenkplek voor het ongeboren kind, is recent gerealiseerd op de begraafplaats te Harderwijk.

 

ERGENS ANDERS solotentoonstelling in CBK Emmen, De Fabriek. Van 8 september tot en met 18 november 2012. Ik laat er een aantal nieuwe werken zien, zoals Au bord de l'eau, Bindi 1 en 2, Bowls (een videowerk) en het werk op de foto hieronder. Bij de tentoonstelling is een zaalboekje verschenen (pdf zaalboekje).

 

INSIDE en LINES AND DOTS op zondag 9 oktober 2011 vond in ateliergebouw de Spanjaardshof de tentoonstelling TUSSEN BEELD & KLANK plaats. Een aantal speciaal voor deze dag gemaakte presentaties beleefden hun première. In samenwerking met Ludmila Rodrigues ontwikkelde ik de installatie INSIDE.

Daarnaast toonde ik de embroidery-loop LINES AND DOTS.

PRECIOUS MEMORIES najaar 2008
Mijn ontwerp voor een beeld voor de kinderafdeling van de Oosterbegraaf-
plaats te Voorburg kan gemaakt worden. Het wordt uitgevoerd in keramiek. Ik werk weer samen met Struktuur 68 en Zuliani.

 

HET VERHAAL VAN HOUT oktober 2008
De kunstopdracht binnen de architectuur van de Burgemeesterwijk te Zaandam is op 15 oktober 'geopend'. Hier op de foto het hekwerk en een stukje van het hardstenen fries, dat doorloopt in verschillende straten en het verhaal van hout vertelt.

 

LABORATORY PIECES juni 2008.
Laboratory Pieces: hier op een prachtige plek in de beeldententoonstelling Contrasten in Kasteel-Museum Sypesteyn te Loosdrecht van 15 juni tot 28 september.

Onderstaande foto is genomen in mijn atelier. Ik werk hier aan het beeld uit de serie Laboratory Pieces, een onderwerp waarover ik eerder vooral getekend heb.

 

UNDER THE SURFACE 2008, januari 2008.
Het gladde opppervlak van de zeespiegel doet je niet vermoeden welke wereld van langzame groeiers en voortglijdende wezens daaronder verborgen zit. Zoals de muren van een huis de kamers binnenin verbergen. Zoals een boom groeit zonder dat wij de wortels kunnen zien en een gezicht tegenover ons haar gedachten niet altijd prijs geeft. In mijn werk onderzoek ik mijn plaats in de wereld. Hoe ben ik verbonden met de mensen, de natuur, de dingen om mij heen? Langs welke lijnen vertakt mijn familiegeschiedenis zich? Hoe werkt het laboratorium van mijn gedachten? Zijn de wegen die ik fysiek afleg verweven met mijn ‘innerlijke plattegrond’? Hoe groeien ervaringen en herinneringen in de loop der tijd? Wat blijft verborgen, wat wordt vergeten, wat wordt opgemerkt?,.... Binnen dit concept ontstaan door de jaren heen beelden en projecten, uitgevoerd in uiteenlopende materialen, maar overeenkomstig qua inhoud en handschrift. Zo ontstonden er vertakte sculpturen als metaforen voor fysieke wortels, uitwaaierende gedachten en een fascinatie voor de natuur. De kantachtige ruimtelijke structuren van UNDER THE SURFACE tonen een aspect van dit onderzoek en zijn te beschouwen als een lichtvoetige verwijzing naar een ongekende wereld ‘onder het oppervlak’.

 

LANT VAN BELOFTE Schiedam, 2007 (zie ook bij opdrachten).
Publicatie, sculptuur en set kaarten Groeten uit het Land van Belofte. Deze vormen een onderdeel van de kunstopdracht Lant van Belofte en werden uitgereikt aan bewoners en omwonenden van de binnentuin met de wand met keramische tekeningen.

LANT VAN BELOFTE de opening september 2007.
Op vrijdag 7 september 2007 is het werk Lant van Belofte geopend. Voor de kloostermuur in de binnentuin van het gelijknamige wooncomplex in het hart van Schiedam maakte ik tekeningen die refereren aan de geschiedenis van de stad. Deze tekeningen zijn uitgevoerd als witgeglazuurde keramische lijnen op de bakstenen achtergrond van de muur. Als onderdeel van deze opdracht heb ik een publicatie samengesteld die uitgedeeld is aan bewoners en omwonenden van het Lant van Belofte.
